Lunatic Attempts to Strangle NY State Trooper in Greene County

A New York State Trooper spent Valentine’s Day in the hospital when a man tried to strangle him and take his gun. The wild incident unfolded after the lunatic reportedly tried attacking a co-worker with a hammer.

State Troopers responded to a 911 call in Earlton, a rural town in Greene County in the Catskills, at approximately 8:24am on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. The call was for a subject attempting to hit someone with a hammer.

Troopers arrived and learned that Frank Baglieri, age 41 of Hudson, attempted to hit a co-worker with a hammer. Baglieri left the scene as police arrived.

The responding trooper stopped the suspect’s vehicle half a mile away and identified Baglieri as the driver. According to the State Police, Baglieri became combative and attacked the trooper.

During the attack, Baglieri allegedly attempted to strangle the trooper and take his gun from the holster. A passing motorist stopped to render aid to the trooper and together they took Baglieri into custody. The trooper, who was not identified, was treated for minor injuries at Albany Medical Center.

Troopers searched Baglieri’s vehicle and reportedly recovered the claw hammer that was used in the previously reported attempted assault.

Baglieri was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd degree; Robbery in the 2nd degree; Assault in the 2nd degree; Menacing in the 2nd degree; Criminal Obstruction of Breathing; Resisting Arrest; Obstruction of Governmental Administration; and Driving While Impaired by Drugs (DWAI).

Baglieri was arraigned in the Town of Cairo Court where Judge Sirago remanded him to Greene County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. Baglieri is scheduled to return to court on February 28, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
