A lunatic was arrested following a high speed chase that led through multiple towns on State Route 17. Speeds reached 130 mph before the driver was arrested and released under the state’s embattled bail reform laws.
At approximately 9:45am on Monday, May 1, 2023, an alert New York State Trooper was patrolling Route 17 in the Town of Goshen when he observed a white 2008 Mercedes traveling in the westbound lanes at a high rate of speed. The trooper attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver attempted to elude police.
The driver fled on Route 17 and reached speeds of 130 mph, police stated. He then turned off at Exit 122 in Fair Oaks and continued onto Beverly Drive until he stopped the vehicle. Police said he got out of the vehicle and began running. The trooper eventually took the suspect into custody without incident.
The defendant was identified as Ronaldo Depass, age 23 from the City of Syracuse.
Depass’ vehicle was impounded. He was charged with Fleeing an Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd degree, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the 2nd degree, and Reckless Driving, all misdemeanors. He was also issued 34 traffic tickets.
Under the state’s bail reform laws, Depass was ticketed and released without bail. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Goshen Court as well as the Town of Wallkill Court.
