State Police Warn of Local Phone Scam Impersonating Troopers

The New York State Police are warning residents of a new phone scam that has come to the area.

Troopers in Ulster County have received several phone calls from concerned citizens reporting they received calls from a male caller claiming to be a representative of the New York State Police. The caller is “spoofing” the phone number of the State Police Kingston barracks. When he calls a potential victim, caller ID falsely shows the police barrack’s phone number.

When the scammer makes contact with a potential victim, he is claiming to be enforcing unpaid taxes and threatening to arrest them.

The State Police wishes to remind the public that their agency does not solicit money or information by phone. The State Police will not call on behalf of the federal government or any other agency or business to collect unpaid taxes or money from unpaid bills.
