The New York State Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred on Interstate 84 in the Town of Wallkill on Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 2:10pm on January 29, 2023, the New York State Police, the Mechanicstown and Maybrook Fire Departments, and Town of Wallkill EMS were dispatched to a reported two-car accident with serious injuries on Interstate 84 westbound near mile marker 20.7.
Troopers arrived to discover a 2020 Acura RDX and a 2019 Dodge both down an embankment off the right shoulder of the westbound lanes.
Troopers reported that the driver of the Dodge had been ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was identified as Sarah Williams, age 35, from Dingmans Ferry, PA. A medevac helicopter had been called during the accident, but was later cancelled.
The driver and passenger of the Acura were not injured.
According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling westbound and collided for unknown reasons. Both vehicles then left the roadway, causing the Dodge to flip over.
State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the vehicles prior to the crash to contact State Police at the Middletown barracks and ask for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) at (845) 344-5300.
