Mamakating Highway Superintendent Convicted of Molesting Child

The Mamakating Highway Superintendent is facing 25 years in the slammer after being convicted today of molesting a small child more than once. The Town of Mamakating encompasses a wide swath on the back side of Middletown which includes Bloomingburg and Wurtsboro.

Robert Hufcut, age 55 of Wurtsboro, was convicted in Orange County Court today following a jury trial. The jury determined that Hufcut had engaged in two or more sexual acts with a child less than age 13 over a period of three months or longer.

Hufcut will be sentenced on March 7, 2023. Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler reported that Hufcut could potentially face 25 years in prison and will be registered as a sex offender. Following the verdict, he was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.

Hoovler thanked the New York State Police for their investigation into the crime and the subsequent arrest.

“Children are precious and vulnerable and their victimization deserves to be met with all resources available to law enforcement,” said Hoovler. “This defendant’s actions are reprehensible and are even more troubling because the defendant is a public official.  I commend the brave actions of the survivor in this case who came forward and testified about the traumatic events suffered at the hands of the defendant.”
