Newburgh Bows Out in State Championship

The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks bowed out in today’s state championships, but the community was still proud of the Varsity football team for making it so far.

The Goldbacks were the runners-up for the New York State championship title in a 42-8 loss against Bennett High School from the Buffalo area during their final game under the dome at Syracuse University this afternoon. The Goldbacks were treated to an escort by first responders from the City and Town of Newburgh while departing for the game early this morning (story here).

The NFA Varsity Cheerleading Squad accompanied the Goldbacks to the game to continue showing their support and cheering on the young men during their final game of the year.

By the end of the first quarter, Bennett had taken off with an 8-0 lead over Newburgh. Heading into the end of the second quarter, Bennett maintained a 30-0 edge over Newburgh before Goldback Tajir Walker scored his team’s only touchdown. The first half ended with Newburgh trailing 30-8.

Bennett scored another 12 points during the second half, securing a 42-8 win over Newburgh.

All in all, the Goldbacks enjoyed a strong season after going undefeated since their third game. Newburgh suffered back-to-back losses in their first two games of the season, both of which were non-league games. From there, Newburgh came back strong and won every single game they played until today’s state championship.

Newburgh ended their victorious season with a 10-3 record.
