The Ramada Inn in the Town of Newburgh has given the boot to a fundraiser for a local youth organization to make room for asylum seekers.
The Goldbacks Youth Football & Cheer had planned a comedy night fundraiser at the Ramada Inn on June 10, 2023. The highly anticipated event was slated to feature local comedian Larry Digregorio, along with fellow comics Jeff Paul and Sydney Castillo from HBO.
This would have been the fifth annual fundraiser for the youth organization. However, since the Goldbacks Youth Football & Cheer says the Ramada Inn is now being used for migrant housing, the hotel will no longer provide space for the event.
The Goldbacks Youth Football & Cheer stated they are “actively exploring options to reschedule” the comedy night. For now, they plan to refund all who have purchased tickets.
The cancellation comes after New York City Mayor Eric Adams began bussing newly arriving asylum seekers into the Town of Newburgh against the wishes of Town of Newburgh and Orange County officials. Newburgh’s Town Code prohibits hotels from being used as shelters.
On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Town of Newburgh Supervisor Gil Piaquadio announced that the town was taking legal action against the Crossroads Hotel for running an illegal shelter (story here).
Yesterday (Tuesday, May 16, 2023), New York State Supreme Court Judge Sandra Sciortino issued a restraining order preventing the Crossroads Hotel from accepting any new migrants. The Crossroads Hotel kicked out United States military veterans last week to make room for 60 newly arriving migrants who came from other countries (story here).
