U.S. Marshals Nab Suspect in City of Newburgh Murder, Shooting of 5 Year-Old

The City of Newburgh Police Department has announced the arrest of a suspect wanted for murdering a 29 year-old man and shooting a 5 year-old boy.

Lamont Williams has been apprehended on an arrest warrant for a homicide that occurred on September 29, 2022 near Washington Street and Clark Street in the City of Newburgh. Today’s announcement came from City of Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose A. Gomerez.

According to Gomerez, the suspect was tracked to North Carolina thanks to intelligence gathered during a month-long investigation by City of Newburgh police detectives and partnering agencies. The U.S. Marshal Service’s Regional Task Force took the accused murdered into custody.

City of Newburgh resident Daquan Corbett, age 29, was shot and killed and a 5 year-old boy sustained injuries from the gunfire. Gomerez stated the young child’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The Newburgh News first published an article about the murder on September 30, 2022 (article here).

“The City of Newburgh Police Department sends a clear message with the arrest of Lamont Williams: when you commit violence in our City, you will be found and brought to justice,” Gomerez declared. “We extend our gratitude to the United States Marshal Service, the New York State Police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and members of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office for partnership and assistance.”

Williams has not yet been returned to New York State, but will be arraigned after being extradited.

Additional details about the case are expected to be announced tomorrow.
