A 5 year-old child was airlifted after being shot while riding his bicycle and another man was killed during a shooting in the City of Newburgh last night.
At approximately 7:07 pm, City of Newburgh police officers were on patrol when they heard gunfire erupt in the area of Washington Street and Clark Street near Washington’s Headquarters. In addition, officers were alerted to gunshots by a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 100 Washington Street. The device is used to detect gunfire within the city.
Officers arrived to find two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
A 5 year-old child had been riding his bicycle and sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. Police officers put the child in their police cruiser and rushed him to St. Luke’s Hospital. From there, the child was airlifted to Westchester County Medical Center. According to the City of Newburgh Police Department, the child’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The second male victim was a 29 year-old City of Newburgh resident who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Officers also put this man into a police car and rushed him to St. Luke’s Hospital. The victim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and was pronounced deceased.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
City of Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose A. Gomerez visited with the injured child and his mother at the hospital. “It is disheartening to see this child’s innocent face lying in a hospital bed, crying in pain,” said the Commissioner. “As a community, we need to take a stand against gun violence and demand we put a stop to the trauma that continues to be inflicted on our children, our youth, and our City.”
Police are conducting a criminal investigation into this incident. The suspect has not yet been apprehended. Anyone with information is urged to call the City of Newburgh Detective Division at (845) 569-7509.
