Gunman Opens Fire at NFA Football Game – Two Women, Man Shot

Three people were shot while leaving a football game at Newburgh Free Academy last night when at least one lunatic opened fire, the City of Newburgh Police Department has confirmed. This comes one night after a 5 year-old boy was shot while riding his bicycle and another man was murdered across town the night before.

At approximately 9:35pm last night, officers working security at the NFA football game heard gunfire coming from one of the northern parking lots at the high school while attendees were exiting the field. Around the same time, the City of Newburgh Police Department received ShotSpotter notifications of gunshots in the area. The series of electronic devices monitors gunfire throughout the city.

Officers arrived on the scene to find three people shot.

The first victim was a 43 year-old woman who was shot in the foot. The second victim was a 19 year-old women who was shot in the thigh. The third victim was a 21 year-old man who was shot in the ankle.

Police officers rendered emergency first aid to all three patients as several ambulances from Mobile Life Support Services scrambled to the scene. All three patients were rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital. None of their injuries are life-threatening, according to police.

No arrests have yet been made, but the City of Newburgh Police are searching for two “persons of interest.” Detectives are attempting to identify two people shown in a surveillance camera image. Anyone who may know their identity or has any information is urged to call the City of Newburgh Police Department’s Detective Division at (845) 569-7509.

On Thursday night, a man was murdered and a 5 year-old boy was shot while riding his bicycle in the area of Washington Street and Clark Street near Washington’s Headquarters. Police put both of the victims into police cars and rushed them to St. Luke’s Hospital (story here).

Despite ongoing hard work by city officials to reduce crime, improve the quality of life, and restore the city’s image, gun violence continues plaguing the City of Newburgh as well as many other cities across New York State. Countless elected officials from both sides of the political aisle have continuously opposed the state’s doomed criminal justice policies.

“The violent crime and shootings in Newburgh have to end,” declared Assemblyman Colin Schmitt. “As both a resident of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District and an Assemblyman representing the school district, the most recent situation following the Newburgh-Warwick football game must be a breaking point that precipitates a full-scale intervention by local, state, and federal law enforcement, as I have repeatedly called for in the past.”

Schmitt said the continued scourge of violence in the city must be addressed “and will also require an effort by local leaders to solve the root causes of these violent criminal acts.”

Schmitt vowed his support to use “any and all government resources,” as well as “repealing the state’s failed no bail law and other so-called criminal justice reforms that are fueling this crisis.”
