Major Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations in Town of Newburgh

Emergency crews are currently operating at the scene of a major gas leak which has prompted the evacuation of stores in the Town of Newburgh.

Workers struck a large diameter natural gas line near the AT&T store in Stop & Shop Plaza at 1431 Union Avenue. Gas is reportedly filling the store. Emergency services are evacuating the entire strip mall, including Stop & Shop.

Fire departments from Winona Lake, Orange Lake, and Cronomer Valley are all operating on the scene with the Town of Newburgh Police Department.

Central Hudson has been called to expedite to the scene.

UPDATES:

8:26am – The Coldenham and Good-Will Fire Departments have been placed on automatic response to cover any other calls in the Town of Newburgh. The Plattekill Fire Department from Ulster County is also standing by in Cronomer Valley.

8:33am – An Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator reports the gas main has been shut off.

8:34am – Town of Newburgh Building Inspectors are being called to the scene.
