About This Tower

Vails Gate Tower is a state-of-the-art weather tower located in New Windsor, NY (Orange County). The tower is positioned at an altitude of 138 feet and is constructed 30 feet above ground level, secured by a cement footing. The entire station operates on electricity, solar power, a battery backup, and an emergency generator backup. It has been recording live weather data 24/7 for nearly two decades.

Hardware: Davis Vantage Pro2 Model 6152, consisting of a main console, data logger, anemometer, rain gauge (tipping every 0.01"), temperature gauge, humidity sensor, barometric pressure sensor, and dewpoint sensor. It also contains an aspirating fan, solar panels, and solar radiation shields. All equipment is calibrated. The tower transmits at 902-928 mhz.

Software: WeatherDisplay is being used to receive all of the data and recordkeeping. The software converts the highly accurate temperature, wind, rainfall, humidity and dewpoint data into current heat indexes, wind chills, and logs countless daily, monthly, and yearly records.

OPERATOR: Vails Gate Tower is operated by The Newburgh News in conjunction with a trained Skywarn spotter who volunteers for the National Weather Service (NWW/NOAA). This tower is also linked to other feeds which which are pulled by the NWS and reported to the public and all media sources during significant weather events.
