Forecasters Hype ‘Impressive’ Snow Storm with ‘Impossible’ Travel Conditions, Power Outages

Meteorologists are forecasting a major snow storm at the start of the work week with up to two feet of snow possible in some areas, windy conditions, difficult travel, and power outages. If it comes to fruition, it will be the largest snow storm of the season just days before the start of spring.

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Watches for the entire area. As conditions become more imminent, it is likely those watches will be upgraded to warnings.

The NWS explained this could be a “long duration and high-impact” storm. Heavy, wet snow, combined with gusty winds, will likely lead to downed trees and numerous power outages across the region, NWS officials stated.

Christopher Gitro, the Meteorologist-in-Charge of the National Weather Service office in Albany, NY, said, “This looks like it’s going to be a fairly impressive storm for all areas of our forecast area, and we had no problems making a jump to a watch this afternoon.”

For Orange County, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday evening. Total snow accumulations of 5-10″ are possible with periods of heavy snow. Travel could be “very difficult” and could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes, the watch states.

For Ulster County, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Total snow accumulations of one to two feet are possible. Travel could be “very difficult to impossible,” including during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes, the watch explains.

For Dutchess County, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Total snow accumulations of one to one-and-a-half feet are possible. Travel could be “very difficult to impossible.” Wind gusts could reach 40 mph. The Tuesday morning and evening commutes will be effected, according to the watch.

For Sullivan County, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning. Total snow accumulations of 8-18″ are possible. Travel could be “very difficult to impossible.” Wind gusts could reach 40 mph. The Tuesday morning and evening commutes will be impacted, the watch says.
