Spring is just ten days away and the region is finally beginning to see measurable snowfall. The National Weather Service has placed Orange County and multiple surrounding counties under a Winter Weather Advisory beginning tonight.
Rain is expected to begin late this afternoon or early this evening before transitioning to snow. By the time it tapers off early tomorrow morning, several inches will have fallen, meteorologists say.
For Orange County, the Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6:00pm tonight – Friday, March 10, 2023, until 10:00am tomorrow. Total snow accumulations are expected to range from 3 to 5 inches, but up to 6 inches are possible north of Interstate 84 and in other higher elevations. Some portions of the Catskills may see 4 to 8 inches.
Hot on its heels may be another more potent storm early next week. The National Weather Service has already issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, cautioning of a storm system early next week with the potential to bring significant snowfall accumulations.
Neil Stuart, a Lead Meteorologist out of the National Weather Service’s Albany office, said there is “increasing confidence for a significant storm Monday through Tuesday.” He explained that models are still showing differences regarding the track, which would determine whether precipitation falls as rain, snow, or a wintry mix.
“Anywhere that gets all snow could potentially see big snows,” Stuart said.
