Multiple fire departments and ambulances have been called to the scene of an active building fire at an apartment complex in the Town of Cornwall. The fire scene is still ongoing.
At approximately 6:45pm, the Cornwall Fire Department, Cornwall Police Department, and New Windsor EMS were all dispatched to a report of smoke filling up an apartment at the Idlewild Creek Apartments, located off Route 9W in Cornwall.
The Cornwall Fire Department’s incident commander arrived on the scene to find an active fire in the attic with multiple residents in the apartment building. He immediately called for help from neighboring departments.
The Cornwall-on-Hudson Fire Department responded to the scene with a ladder truck and a pumper. The Vail’s Gate Fire Department rushed to the scene with a FAST Team, tasked with rescuing any firefighters who become trapped in a fire. The Salisbury Mills Fire Department hurried in with a pumper.
The Vail’s Gate Fire Department’s FAST Team was put to work performing other firefighting operations. The West Point Fire Department then responded with a FAST Team. They were eventually utilized for firefighting purposes and the Washingtonville Fire Department responded with a FAST Team.
At approximately 7:55pm, the incident commander reported the bulk of the fire was knocked down. Firefighters are continuing to perform extensive overhaul of the areas damaged by the fire.
New Windsor EMS responded with several ambulances. There was an initial report of one occupant in the apartment who reportedly made it out. It is unknown if there are any injuries as the scene is still ongoing.
An additional crew from the Vail’s Gate Fire Department is covering any other emergencies in Cornwall, Cornwall-on-Hudson, and Salisbury Mills.
An Orange County fire investigator has been called to the scene.
