First responders had their hands full with 18 vehicles that had wrecked on Route 9W on Storm King Mountain early this morning.
Police, firefighters, and several ambulances were initially dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with cars that had rolled over at approximately 6:24am. The Fort Montgomery fire chief arrived on the scene to discover 18 vehicles were involved in multiple accidents on the mountain.
According to radio reports, vehicles had crashed on top of other vehicles. Multiple cars had rolled over.
Route 9W was immediately shut down in both directions to avoid additional accidents and to allow emergency services to aid the drivers. Emergency medical services conducted triage on all of the patients. There is no word on the total number of people injured or the extent of their injuries.
Both directions of Route 9W will remain closed through the morning for a prolonged cleanup. Tow trucks were called for all 18 vehicles. The accident scene is currently ongoing.
The cause of the accident has not yet been stated, but black ice has remained on some roadways since Saturday’s light snowfall.
