Driver Airlifted from Head-on with Garbage Truck in Town of Newburgh

A driver is in critical condition following a head-on accident involving a garbage truck and a car that occurred on Route 300 near the Newburgh Town Hall overnight.

At approximately 4:00am on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, the Cronomer Valley Fire Department was dispatched to a reported vehicle accident with serious injuries and entrapment on Route 300 in the area of Plattekill Turnpike. The accident scene was in the vicinity of the Town of Newburgh Police Department and the Town Hall.

Along with the Cronomer Valley Fire Department, the Town of Newburgh Police Department and Town of Newburgh EMS rushed to the scene to help. Firefighters used Jaws equipment to remove the driver from the vehicle.

A medevac helicopter from LifeNet landed nearby and transported one patient to the Westchester County Medical Center. There is no word on the condition of the other driver.

Route 300 remained closed from Plattekill Turnpike to Gardnertown Road into morning commute while Town of Newburgh Police investigated the accident. The cause and the names involved have not yet been released.
