The potential of a “serious accident” is looming in front of a local school, New Windsor Town Supervisor George Meyers warned yesterday.
Meyers described a “dangerous situation” on Union Avenue at the intersection entering the Heritage Middle School which he said “continues to be very concerning” to him. The warning came in a written correspondence that he issued to Michael Villarosa, a Principal Engineer with the Orange County government, along with Matthew Tindall, the Director of Safety and Security for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Union Avenue is a county road and the school is operated by the NECSD.
The issue at hand is parents or guardians illegally parking alongside Union Avenue waiting to pick up students during dismissal time. Meyers explained that these illegally parked cars are forcing other motorists to drive in the opposite lanes of traffic. “I am just putting you on notice that it is just a matter of time before we have a serious accident at that location,” Meyers declared.
“The county and the school have an obligation to help rectify this situation,” Meyers informed Villarosa and Tindall.
In the meantime, Meyers noted that the New Windsor Police Department is “doing all they can do to help prevent a serious accident from occurring at that location.”
Residents have chimed in stating that several other schools in the Town of Newburgh and beyond are also encountering the same problems. “How come residents don’t ride buses anymore?” one resident asked.
