Hurricane Remnants May Bring Flooding Rains, Winds, Thunderstorms to Hudson Valley

The remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole are forecast to impact the Hudson Valley on Veteran’s Day, the National Weather Service is cautioning. A Flood Watch may be issued, the government meteorologists stated.

Nicole is currently a high-end tropical storm over the Bahamas packing 70 mph wind gusts. It is expected to strengthen into a low-end Category 1 hurricane tonight before making landfall on Florida’s east coast overnight. It is then forecast to move northward through central Florida, across Georgia, and up the Appalachians before moving over the Hudson Valley.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook ahead of the remnants potentially moving across the area. The remnant moisture will accompany a frontal boundary and is likely to bring heavy rains and gusty winds to the region on Friday and possibly into Saturday.

Scattered flash flooding may become a threat, according to the National Weather Service. Minor flooding is also possible in urban and poor drainage areas.

“Main stem river flooding cannot be ruled out in a few locations,” reported Michael Evans, the Science & Operations Officer from the National Weather Service Office in Albany, NY.

Forecasters are predicting a widespread one to two inches of rain from Friday into early Saturday morning. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are also possible across the Hudson Valley.

There is also an “increasing potential” for embedded thunderstorms as the remnants move over the area, so-called experts say. The instability is expected to be limited with the tropical-like air mass, so there is a low probability of severe winds or tornadoes during any thunderstorms that develop.

After the remnants exit the area, temperatures are forecast to drop into the upper 20s by Monday night. Snow showers may develop on Tuesday night into Wednesday.
