Vail’s Gate Proposal of New $21.3M Firehouse Prompts Special Election

New Windsor and Cornwall residents living in the Vail’s Gate Fire District will have an opportunity to head out and vote in a special election for whether or not to build a new $21.3 million firehouse. The District is also in the process of purchasing a new, state-of-the-art ladder truck to replace one of their two aging trucks.

The new firehouse would replace Station #1 on Route 94 near the Five Corners. The station houses two pumpers, a ladder truck, a rescue truck, and a brush truck.

The Vail’s Gate Fire Department also has a Station #2 off Route 207 in the town’s west end. This proposal does not impact Station #2. This station houses two additional pumpers and an additional ladder truck.

The special election, open to all residents within their coverage area who are registered voters, will be held from 6:00pm to 9:00pm on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. All voters turning out must cast their votes at Station #1.

If approved by the voters, the resolution will authorize the construction of a new firehouse and accessory storage garage at the current Station #1 location. It would be owned by the Vail’s Gate Fire Company, Inc. and leased by the Vail’s Gate Fire District.

The cost would include demolition, grading and improving the site, and purchase of original equipment or machinery for the project.

The estimated maximum cost of the project is $21,300,000. This includes preliminary costs, incidental costs, and financing.

In addition, Firematic Supply, a Pierce fire apparatus distributor based out of Shirley, NY, announced today that the Vail’s Gate Fire Department is purchasing a custom built ladder truck. The new rig will feature a 107-foot aerial ladder and a 500 gallon water tank.

The Vail’s Gate Fire Department covers a wide swath of New Windsor extending from the Hudson River to Maybrook. Their jurisdiction includes Stewart International Airport, five schools, the Thruway, multiple shopping centers and businesses, countless apartment and condo complexes, and many residential neighborhoods.
