New Windsor Town Supervisor George Meyers has endorsed New York State Senator James Skoufis in his bid for re-election, it was announced today. Meyers is a Republican and Skoufis is a Democrat.
This is the latest in the string of endorsements from Orange County municipal leaders on both sides of the political aisle. Skoufis is facing Republican challenger Dorey Houle.
Skoufis has earned the endorsements of numerous law enforcement unions, including the New York State AFL-CIO, the Police Conference of New York, the Orange County Corrections Officers Benevolent Association, the Orange County Deputy Sheriffs Police Benevolent Association, and the New York State Troopers Benevolent Association. Meyers is a retired Major with the New York State Police.
“As a former police commander, I take funding our first responders very seriously,” said Meyers. “When some in his party were calling to defund the police, James Skoufis came out in support of our brave men and women in uniform, and provided funding for the New Windsor Police Department. He’s also been a huge supporter of my own efforts to keep our neighbors safe, and he has my full backing in this race.”
Recently, Skoufis announced more than $1.3 million in funding for Orange County’s first responders (story here).
“I’ve worked closely with Supervisor Meyers for many years and know that his heart is with the people of New Windsor, not with politics,” said Skoufis. “His support is meaningful during this pivotal time as early voting is underway. He knows that I’ll always fight to protect and support New Windsor’s families and first responders in the years to come.”
Earlier this week, Skoufis also announced the support of Republican Woodbury Mayor Andrew Giacomazza and two of the village board’s Republican trustees. Skoufis has long been backed by local leaders of both parties in his elections to the state legislature. He is running in the new 42nd Senate District which comprises the vast majority of Orange County.
