Cowan’s Jewelers Inducted into State Historic Registry

Cowan’s Jewelers of New Windsor was formally inducted into the exclusive New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry this week.

Cowan’s Jewelers is now one of just over 100 businesses statewide to have earned entry into the preservation registry and the first to be officially nominated from the 99th Assembly District. This designation is part of the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. A business must be nominated by a state official and have been in business for a minimum of 50 years.

The induction came with the help of New York State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt. “Cowan’s Jewelers has been part of the fabric of the New Windsor and Orange County business community for over 85 years,” Schmitt explained. “Three generations of the Cowan family have run this business serving the needs of area residents and providing top-notch service with an impeccable reputation. Small family-run businesses are the backbone of our economy and Cowan’s stands out for its longevity and reputation that spans generations. It was an easy decision to make my inaugural nomination and induction into the exclusive State Historic Business Preservation Registry, Cowan’s Jewelers. Cowan’s will now be forever enshrined in the state registry and be part of the amazing history of the state for all of the time.”

Jeff Cowan, Owner of Cowan’s Jewelers thanked Schmitt for the induction. “Starting with my grandfather, then my father, and myself, it has been our pleasure to serve the Hudson Valley for over 85 years,” Cowan exclaimed. “They say if you love your job, you’ll never work a day in your life. I love what we do here at Cowan’s Jewelers. Thank you to all of our customers, many of whom had generations come through our doors so we can help with their special moments. It’s truly our pleasure. Thank you!”

New Windsor Councilman Stephen Bedetti stated, “Such a special recognition for Cowan’s Jewelers. A wonderful family-owned business that has been a constant in our community. This is a well-deserved recognition. Thank you, Assemblyman Schmitt, and congratulations to Cowan’s Jewelers.”

New Windsor Councilman Steve Moreau added, “Congratulations to Cowan’s Jewelers on such prestigious recognition. The Cowans have a longstanding history of understanding their customer’s needs and being there to ensure their satisfaction. Thank you, Assemblyman Schmitt, for supporting this New Windsor business and for recognizing the important role that small businesses play in our communities.”

Susan Scheible, New Windsor Town Receiver of Taxes stated, “I am thrilled to see such a worthy New Windsor business receive this recognition. Jeff and his family are the fabric of our community and have made so many people’s dreams become reality. Congratulations and thank you, Assemblyman Colin Schmitt for being a champion for New Windsor’s small businesses.”
