Twenty upstanding citizens are currently wanted by the Town of Newburgh Police Department.
Each of the suspects have already been arrested and charged with crimes in the Town of Newburgh. However, thanks to New York State’s bail reform laws, police are now forced to release most of the suspected criminals without bail. Several of those suspects choose to skip court with little or no repercussions.
When the defendants fail to appear in court, warrants are issued for their arrests. However, it becomes a vicious cycle. Once they are re-arrested on warrants for failing to appear, they are given new court dates and again released without bail. Thus, the never-ending cycle continues.
According to Town of Newburgh Police officials, the number of open arrest warrants in their jurisdiction have increased over 40% since the bail reform policies took effect. Several of the outstanding warrants date back two to three years.
One of the defendants, Bishmi Thrasher, was arrested for an alleged violent domestic dispute in July of 2022 and remains on the lam after skipping court. Defendant Christopher Benjamin is wanted for Criminal Contempt in a domestic dispute, but he never returned to court since his 2019 arrest.
The Bail Reform Act went into effect on January 1, 2019. They were enacted by disgraced ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo, who many political opponents accused of being pro-crime. Some even speculated that Cuomo was rigging the system for himself in case he was criminally charged with numerous scandals that later resulted in his forced resignation.
Governor Kathy Hochul took the helm and doubled down on keeping the bail reform laws as-is. Hochul, a Democrat, is currently up for election and is being challenged by Republican Lee Zeldin.
“Hochul’s pandering to pro-criminal supporters is resulting in the handcuffs getting slapped on our judges and law enforcement, rather than getting tough on criminals,” Zeldin stated.
Hochul spokeswoman Hazel Crampton-Hays recently complained, “The notion that judges’ hands are tied is simply not supported by facts nor the data.”
