GAMS Kicks Off Career Explorations Program

Students at the Gidney Avenue Memorial School recently kicked off their SEL Career Explorations Programming, which was themed “Your Future is Bright.”

The purpose of the weekly event is to promote mindsets and behaviors that enhance the learning process and create a culture of college and career readiness for all students grades K-5. The SEL Career Explorations Programming centers around ASCA Domain/Standards guiding school counseling programs to help students understand the connection between school and work, and plan for and make a successful transition from school to post secondary education and/or the world of work.

This program is an “exploration series” and students will continue to be exposed to a variety of careers/trades weekly through March 23, 2023.

Guest speakers for the first event included: Dr. Jackielyn Manning-Campbell, Superintendent of Schools, NECSD; Torrance Harvey, Mayor of Newburgh; Mike Chanowitz, Plumbing and HVAC Expert; Justin Cooper, Athletic Trainer/Business Owner; and Anthony Williams, Director of Guidance & Data (NECSD).

The special guests each shared their individual stories and personal career paths.  Their message to the scholars focused heavily on education, dreaming big, and hard work.  Led by event coordinator and school counselor, Pattie Lofaro, the scholars were encouraged to take notes and ask questions.
