They say the third time’s a charm.
City of Newburgh resident Roger Alleyne, a two-time ex-convict, will head back to the state penitentiary for the third time following a shooting last year. He is 34 years old.
On April 26, 2022, the City of Newburgh Police Department was notified by ShotSpotter of shots fired in the vicinity of Washington Street. The electronic devices monitors for the sounds of gunfire and notifies police when it is detected.
When police arrived, they found Alleyne and he allegedly refused to respond to requests by the police. Officers eventually recovered a loaded 380 Taurus firearm from his pocket, which he possessed illegally. Police also located a corresponding shell casing near the area where he was standing.
“Violent and senseless gunplay using illegally possessed weapons poses a grave risk of harm,” said Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “Thankfully, the prompt response and investigation by the police officers in this case ensured that this illegally possessed firearm would not cause further irreversible harm.”
Alleyne has been sentenced to 11 years in the joint for his guilty plea of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd degree.
He first visited the state penitentiary in 2007 on a charge of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd degree, according to public records. He was sentenced to 20 months to 4 years. At some point, he was paroled, but returned to the slammer in 2011. He won another parole in 2012.
His next visit to the pen was just two years later, in 2014, on two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 4th degree. This time, he won a more lenient sentence of up to two years in prison. At some point, he was paroled, but returned again in 2017. He was released later that year.
