Cornwall firefighters were hard at work battling two large blazes in less than a 24 hour period.
At approximately 11:30am yesterday – Thursday, March 2, 2023, the Woodbury Fire Department was called out to a report of a car carrier on fire alongside the northbound lanes of the Thruway in the area of milemarker 47.1 near the Smith Clove Road overpass. Orange County 911 received multiple calls from passers-by. See the video below.
The Woodbury Fire Department’s incident commander was responding and noticed heavy smoke showing from a distance. He immediately called for a tanker from the Cornwall Fire Department and two tankers from the Monroe Fire Department.
Eight cars being carried on the truck were fully engulfed in flames. Both northbound lanes of the Thruway were eventually shut down while firefighters from three companies knocked down the fire.
On Wednesday night, Cornwall firefighters were assisted by multiple local companies while fighting a fire at the Idlewild Creek Apartments. The Newburgh News broke the story live as it happened (story here).
