A large group of high school students from Newburgh Free Academy recently ventured down the street to Gidney Avenue Memorial School to work with their younger peers in exploring computer technology.
Approximately 60 students from NFA worked with nearly 100 students from GAMS during Computer Science Education Week, which is aimed to promote computer science education in schools.
The NFA students from Introduction to Computer Science classes created quizzes that aligned with third grade curriculum in math and science. The topics ranged from multiplication to the solar system to animal habitats. The goal was to have the students explore the computer science platform, Scratch, a block-based visual programming language, while also learning third grade curriculum.
After the students completed the quizzes, they were able to create their own quiz with help from the NFA students. District officials reported that the high school students showed a different side while they interacted with the younger students.
