Gardnertown Students Create Native American Projects

Fourth grade students at the Gardnertown Elementary School in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District created shrines for Native Americans recently.

Fourth grade students in Caitlin Feeley and Delilah Rugg’s class read through packets that had Native American picture writing symbols. The students then brainstormed a story idea and utilized knowledge of story arcs to build their creative writing pieces.

Each student wrote the story in English on the backs of their animal hides and the symbol story on the front.

The students were given a project menu that contained three choices for a project on the Native American unit. One option was to build a home of the Algonquians or Haudenosaunee. The next choice was to create a short picture book covering numerous topics learned about in the uni, such as homes, food, jobs, clothing, and travel. Their final choice was to create a board game with questions and directions how to play.
