NFA History Classes Tour City of Newburgh Streets

A group of 11th grade students at Newburgh Free Academy recently toured the historic City of Newburgh to learn about their hometown history.

Students in Jennine Sileno and Ginny McCurdy’s classes hit the streets for their annual field trip to the City of Newburgh.  The students first read numerous Newburgh Heritage articles written by City Historian Mary McTamaney to learn about local history.

Sixty students and their chaperones then boarded a bus for Beacon. The group stood at Long Dock Park to view the City of Newburgh from across the Hudson River.  Next, they took to the water with a ferry ride to Newburgh, followed by a walk to the Newburgh Brewery to play trivia games about famous Newburgh residents like A.J. Downing, the Alsdorf Brothers and the Ward Brothers. They also visited famous landmarks such as the Palatine Hotel, the Academy of Music and the Ritz Theater.

After touring Washington Headquarters, the students picnicked on the grounds enjoying balmy 60 degree weather before touring SUNY Orange campus and returning to NFA.

The bus and ferry transportation as well as admission to Washington Headquarters was sponsored by Connect Kids Field Trip Grant Program.
