Dozens of incoming Mount Saint Mary College freshmen got an early start on service to the local community in the City of Newburgh and Cornwall-on-Hudson on Saturday.
More than 40 students from the college’s Summer Bridge program enjoyed a day of service at three locations: The Newburgh Armory Unity Center, a Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh build site, and the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
At the Newburgh Armory, the students got local children excited about academics at the Armory’s ongoing Saturday morning enrichment programs. At the Habitat build site, the incoming Mount freshmen pulled up their sleeves, put on their work gloves, and reinvigorated the backyard of a home on North Miller Street. Meanwhile, another group of new Mount students helped to pack and organize hundreds of donations at the food bank.
The college’s Summer Bridge program helps new students transition smoothly from high school to college. Participants in the fields of Nursing, Natural Sciences, and the Humanities get a head start on their academics with Mount professors and staff as their mentors.
The incoming freshmen began Summer Bridge on Sunday, August 14 and will complete the program right before the start of the Fall 2022 semester on Monday, August 29.
