A Town of Newburgh woman was arrested by the New York State Police while driving on a side street on Saturday night. Troopers say she had no driver’s license and was already on probation for another drunken driving charge with a child in the car.
At approximately 10:20pm on Saturday, 4/29/2023, an alert trooper was patrolling Hy Vue Drive, located off North Plank Road, when he reportedly observed a 2006 Nissan Altima in violation of traffic laws. The trooper initiated a traffic stop.
Johnisha Boykin, age 26 of the Town of Newburgh, was found to be drunk, did not have a valid driver’s license, and was currently on probation for a previous Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated conviction under Leandra’s Law, according to police. Leandra’s Law criminalizes drunken driving with a child in the car.
Boykin was arrested and charged with felony Driving While Intoxicated for having a previous drunken driving conviction in the last ten years. She was also charged with Violation of Probation, a felony; Aggravated Unlicensed Operator in the 1st degree, a felony; and Circumventing or Tampering with a Vehicle Ignition Interlock Device, a misdemeanor.
Boykin was released due to the state’s bail laws and is scheduled to return to the Town of Newburgh Court on June 12, 2023, at 5:30pm.
