After 20 Years, Town of Newburgh Couple Graduates College Together

Nearly two decades after beginning their journey together, a husband and wife from the Town of Newburgh graduated college together on Saturday. See a video with interviews below.

High school sweethearts Tanesha, 36, and John Lassiter, 38, grew up together in Newburgh and went to college straight out of high school. However, life got in the way, and they both had to put their educations on hold to enter the workforce.

Tanesha later left her job to raise their three children, but never stopped wanting to finish college. In 2019, John was faced with needing to relocate with his company or find a new career. The couple eventually moved to Louisiana.

That’s when they both decided to enroll online at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) to prepare themselves for their future careers.

“We did it together, always having each other’s back and encouraging one another to keep pushing forward,” said Tanesha. “That is why my degree is just as much my husband’s win as his is mine.”

John discussed their three children and explained, “Day to day is very hectic trying to do our school work, trying to do their school work, making sure everybody is hitting their deadlines. But we get through.”

Tanesha earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology while John earned his Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity. Both graduated during a ceremony at the college on Saturday.
