The New Windsor Little League will hold a special memorial to honor the late Jett Diaz during their upcoming opening day ceremony. Their peers from the Town of Newburgh Little League will join in at the observance.
The field that is home to New Windsor’s Major Division, which is where Diaz spent his final year playing, will be renamed to honor the legendary ball player. The ceremony is open to the public and will be held this Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 9:00am. Anyone attending is asked to wear their favorite team jersey, especially if it is a Mets jersey since that was Diaz’s favorite team.
The Town of Newburgh Little League will also open for the season this Saturday. In a show of sportsmanship, they are graciously refraining from hosting opening day ceremonies. Instead, they are encouraging their players and families to attend New Windsor’s memorial service.
Diaz was a prominent local baseball player who passed away at the age of 14 just before Christmas (see the story here). He had been diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor and the well-known community event “Jog for Jett” ensued.
Before his death, Diaz was summonsed to Citi Field to sign a contract playing with the Mets. After a press conference, he warmed up on the field with the Mets and threw out the first pitch. The Mets issued a statement after his passing and referred to him as a “teammate” (see the story here).
