A man was murdered in the City of Newburgh late last night, the City of Newburgh Police Department has confirmed.
At approximately 10:20pm on Thursday, March 16, 2023, police received a 911 call to respond to Varick Homes, located near South Street and Water Street in the downtown section of the city. City of Newburgh Manager Todd Venning and Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez issued a joint press release on the homicide today.
The City of Newburgh is not disclosing what the original 911 call was for.
Officers arrived and found a deceased male inside of a residence with obvious signs of trauma. Police are not disclosing whether it was a shooting, stabbing, assault, or other type of trauma.
A “person of interest” is in custody and police insist there is “no further threat to our community.”
The identity of the deceased subject is not being released by police pending notification of the person’s family members.
The City of Newburgh is not releasing any further information about the homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call the City of Newburgh Police Department’s Detective Division at (845) 569-7509.
Today’s press release was the first to be issued about any serious crimes in the City of Newburgh in the last five months. The last press release issued about a major crime was on October 28, 2022. One month prior, the Newburgh City Council declared that they would begin to “control the narrative” of what the public is allowed to know about.
Over the last week, The Newburgh News has published several articles exposing the City of Newburgh for a lengthy pattern of censorship. The city also denied an open records request for police reports regarding recent major crimes, but later released the public records to The Newburgh News after numerous articles exposing the ongoing censorship (see the most recent story here).
