Genevieve G. Long

December 27, 1931 – March 15, 2023 (age 91)

Newburgh, NY

Genevieve G. Long of Newburgh, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2023 at home
with family.

“Gen” was born in Pickrell Nebraska on December 27, 1931 to Clifford C. Winkle and
Ethleen Yarnall Winkle, one of 11 children. She proudly followed in the footsteps of her
8 brothers who made the commitment to serve our country.

She served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954 earning the rank of Staff
Sergeant, having joined shortly after women were allowed to serve. Her last duty station
was Stewart Airfield where she met her future husband, also an Airman assigned to
Stewart Airfield. She married the local Reed M Long and made Newburgh her home.

She was predeceased by Reed M. Long after 41 years of marriage. Survivors include
her children Cassandra (Candy) and her husband J. Craig Gabel, Reed C. (Chip) Long
and his partner Dawn Meyers, Timothy Long and his partner Mary Lynch, and Dale
Long and his wife Tina.

She also is survived by her nine grandchildren: Melynie Lorenz, Cori Long- Sureas,
Jennifer Bishop, David Long, Jonathan Long, Joseph Long, Michele Long, George
Gabel and J. Craig Gabel Jr. in addition to 6 Great Grandchildren and one 5th generation
Great Great Grandson. The joining of two large families resulted in her having over 70
nieces and nephews.

She enjoyed travel, family gatherings at the house, as well as the friendships from bingo
and Newburgh’s Club 60. She kept her adventurous spirit through her later years
including skydiving for her 80th birthday and participating as an honored veteran by the
Hudson Valley Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 2022.

Her special wit, fun nature, and sarcasm will be missed.

The immediate family would like to acknowledge and thank Debbie Kinsley, who gave
Mom special care and became a close loved one during her final days.

There will be a gathering at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave, Newburgh, NY on
Monday, March 20 from 4-7 pm. A service and military honors planned for 6-7pm.
