Goldbacks Bow Out After Reaching Quarterfinals

The Newburgh Free Academy Varsity basketball team ended their season yesterday, but proudly made it to the New York State quarterfinals before bowing out.

Newburgh fell to North Rockland in a marginal 53-46 upset in the Class AA regional final played at the Yorktown High School yesterday. North Rockland will now advance to the New York State Final Four in Glens Falls.

The NFA Goldbacks started off strong by sinking five consecutive three-pointers, earning a 15-7 lead. By the end of the first quarter, Newburgh maintained a 17-13 lead over North Rockland.

Newburgh continued their run in the second quarter, scoring nine more points. The game went into halftime with Newburgh ahead 26-22.

North Rockland pulled ahead after the break and ended the third quarter with Newburgh trailing 39-34.

With four minutes remaining on the clock, Newburgh remained down by six points, trailing North Rockland 44-38. Newburgh rallied an additional eight points before the buzzer, but it was not enough as North Rockland enjoyed a 53-46 victory.

The loss ended Newburgh’s post-season.

The Goldbacks are coached by Head Coach Jason McAllister, Assistant Coach Mike Robinson, JV Head Coach Tyree Smallwood, and volunteer Todd Cooper. McCallister, Robinson, and Cooper are all alumni of the NFA Basketball program.
