Newburgh, Cornwall Wrestlers Soar in Annual Tourney

Wrestlers from Newburgh Free Academy and Cornwall excelled both as a team and individually in a tournament held during the holiday recess.

Cornwall Dragon wrestler Tyler Reed was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament while Newburgh Goldback Cooper Merli was selected the Most Outstanding Freshman.

A total of 27 high schools competed in the tournament. Newburgh finished in third place with 182 points while Cornwall followed in fourth place with 142 points at the 56th annual Mid-Hudson Invitational Wrestling Tournament held at the Arlington High School on Friday.

Newburgh’s Merli clinched first place in the championship final of the 102 pound division, defeating Longwood High School’s Anthony Lagala-Ryan with a 7-2 decision.

Cornwall’s Reed captured first place in the 160 pound division of the championship final. He defeated Collegiate’s Sean Tansey with a 7-1 decision.

Newburgh’s Kevin Segali earned his way to the championship final in the 145 pound division, where he bowed out to Roy C. Ketchum High School’s Matthew Masch in 4:51. This still gave Segali a second place tournament victory in his weight division.

Cornwall’s Nicholas Cavallo made his way to the championship final in the 172 pound division before falling to Miller Place High School’s Robert Cunningham in 5:45. Cavallo captured a second place win in the tournament.

Cornwall’s Gavin Furst competed in the championship final in the 215 pound division, falling to Longwood’s William Francois in 3:59. Furst still enjoyed a second place ranking in his weight division.

Newburgh soared in the third round of the consolation finals while wrestlers William Soto, Matthew Mercado, Joseph Ponesse, and Christopher Leggett all earned third place finishes in the tournament. Soto secured a 17-2 win over Longwood’s Devin Connelly. Mercado defeated Xavier’s Cael Loria 16-0. Ponesse beat Hewlett’s Ryan Goodman in a 6-5 decision in the 172 pound division. Leggett earned a 5-3 win over Hewlett’s Ian Fleurant.

In the fifth round of the consolation finals, Cornwall’s Marco Giumarra overcame Xavier High School’s Kevin Kasperowski in a 6-4 decision, earning the fifth place title. Cornwall’s Patrick Cosgrove put up a tough fight in the 152 pound division’s fifth consolation final, surrendering to Rocky Point’s Kyle Moore in a 1-0 decision. Cosgrove finished in sixth place in his weight division. Teammate Liam Scott bowed out to Ward Melville High School’s Joshua Rettig in 4:03 in the 189 pound division, also securing a sixth place victory.

Newburgh’s Jordan Busby made it to the fifth consolation final before being defeated by Ward Melville’s Zachary Rothenberg in a 7-4 decision. Busby earned a sixth place victory in the tournament.

Xavier High School and Longwood High School were the only two teams to top Newburgh and Cornwall in the tournament. Xavier finished with 253 points, followed by Longwood with 184 points – just two points more than Newburgh.

So far this season, Cornwall is maintaining a 9-1 record while Newburgh holds a 5-1 record.
