Goldback Swimmers Enjoy Strong Start to Season

The Newburgh Free Academy boys’ swimming and diving team is off to a strong start with an undefeated record while also qualifying eight swimmers for the championships later this season.

The Newburgh Goldbacks competed against the Minisink Valley Warriors and the Red Hook Raiders during the first meet of the season in a non-league, three-way competition. Newburgh clinched first place in the meet with 529 points. Minisink Valley finished in second place with 302 points, followed by Red Hook in third place with 285 points.

Eight swimmers from Newburgh qualified for the Section 9 championships in February. Each of the athletes qualified for two events, including Jack Mummery Jack Mummery (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Vicente Velasquez (200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle), Conor Mummery (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Peyton Tuttle (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard backstroke), Jackson Cooper (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke), Angelo Reade (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle), Jackson Gerbes (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly) and Aiden Domanico (100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke).

Before the start of the holiday break, the Goldbacks secured two more victories. Newburgh captured a 95-76 win at home versus New Paltz, followed by a 93-67 home victory over Marlboro. Both were league meets.

Newburgh is now maintaining a 3-0 record and is ranked in second place in Section 9. Red Hook, which Newburgh defeated early in the season, currently holds a 4-1 conference record.

Newburgh is next scheduled to face Beacon at the NFA pool tomorrow – December 22, 2022, in a league meet.
