Congratulations to Cowan’s Jewelers for Your Exclusive Honor

Yesterday, The Newburgh News reported that longtime New Windsor business Cowan’s Jewelers was inducted into the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry (story here). This is an exclusive honor that has only been afforded to just over 100 businesses across the state – ever.

This high honor is much deserved by Jeff Cowan, the business owner. He is a third-generation owner of his family’s business, which has now been an icon in New Windsor for 85 years.

During an era where mom and pop shops are falling by the wayside, Jeff has done something right to continue his thriving family business for so long. It was founded by his grandfather, turned over to his father, and ultimately turned over to Jeff. He has been operating the business for decades. The business has survived well over three-quarters of a decade through some harsh economic times, including the current tough economy where would-be customers might not be able to afford non-essential items such as jewelry. Running a business during a poor economy is no easy feat, but Jeff has managed to overcome it.

Another obstacle Jeff has faced is the growing competition in the area as overgrowth continues to sprawl throughout Orange County. Despite this, longtime loyal customers along with newly arriving buyers still continue pouring in due to the reputation of the jewelry store.

The popular review site Yelp is inundated with outstanding reviews for Cowan’s Jewelers. Out of a total of 21 reviews, every single one of them are five stars – the highest rating that can be achieved. Even the best of local businesses almost always have several reviews that are four stars, with some having one-star reviews. Cowan’s has nothing but unanimous rave reviews. Google Reviews are also consistent with five-star reviews. Many of the reviews mention the kindness and knowledge that Jeff and his employees all provide.

It is difficult nowadays to find a business where all staff members have knowledge about the products they are selling and take the time to educate their customers. This certainly is not something that customers will find in any of the box stores such as Wal-Mart or Home Depot.

Some may remember Jeff’s stint on television around 25 years ago. He took a part-time gig announcing local sports games on the former Time Warner Cable news channel. He surely did not need this job since he owned and operated Cowan’s Jewelers simultaneously. He did this because he enjoyed doing something for his community.

The Newburgh News congratulates Mr. Cowan, as well as his wife Denise Zeve Housman (also of Cowan’s Jewelers), and all of their hard-working employees, for their newfound honor. We wish Jeff and his family many more decades of success.
