Severe Thunderstorms, Tornadoes Possible Today

Severe thunderstorms with isolated tornadoes are possible this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, which is tasked with tracking the nation’s severe storm outbreaks, has placed Orange County under a risk for severe thunderstorms, a risk for tornadoes, a risk for damaging wind gusts associated with thunderstorms, and a risk for hail.

The local National Weather Service in Upton, NY concurs. They have already placed Orange County under a Hazardous Weather Outlook, detailing the threat for severe thunderstorms and an isolated tornado.

According to the so-called experts, a warm front will move across the region this morning and bring moisture into the area. Temperatures will rise into the 70s. As the high pressure system associated with the warm front departs, an incoming low pressure system will follow closely behind it. This will increase instability aloft and enhance wind shear in multiple directions, which is capable of producing tornadoes.

Storms are expected to increase in coverage mainly in the afternoon and evening.
