Two Dead in Head-on Accident on Thruway with Entrapment, Fire

Two drivers suddenly lost their lives overnight in a head-on accident on the New York State Thruway in Tuxedo, located in southern Orange County. The accident allegedly involved a wrong-way driver.

At approximately 1:00 am this morning, the Tuxedo Fire Department and New York State Police were dispatched to a reported car accident with entrapment and serious injuries in the southbound lane of Interstate 87 at mile marker 36.0.

First responders arrived on the scene to find a car fully engulfed in flames. The Sloatsburg Fire Department was called to assist.

The Kiryas Joel Ambulance Corp and Hatzalah Ambulance both responded to the scene.

According to a representative of the New York State Police, a preliminary investigation determined that a passenger vehicle was driving northbound in the southbound lanes between Exit 16 (Harriman) and Exit 15A (Sloatsburg). The wrong-way vehicle struck another passenger vehicle head on.

Both drivers were pronounced deceased on the scene. There were no other occupants in the vehicles.

All southbound lanes of the Thruway remain closed during the morning rush hour commute while police conduct an accident reconstruction.

The names of the drivers are being withheld until their family members are notified.

The Newburgh News is refraining from publishing photos of the accident scene until the family members are notified.
