Four Arrested in Town of Newburgh Murder

A Pennsylvania man was murdered on Willella Place in the Town of Newburgh, police announced tonight. Three local women and one local man have been charged.

At approximately 9:15 pm on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, the Town of Newburgh Police Department was dispatched to a reported “man down” on Willella Place. Police arrived and found Edgar Stone, age 38 of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, laying in the driveway with significant injuries. Town of Newburgh EMS rushed Stone to St. Luke’s Hospital and he was subsequently airlifted to Westchester County Medical Center in critical condition.

Police began investigating and witnesses claimed that Stone had fallen or jumped from the roof in an attempted suicide. Officers observed a ladder placed to the roof of the house. An ensuing police investigation determined that Stone did not jump or fall off the roof. Detectives learned Stone was assaulted.

On August 14, 2022, Stone succumbed to his injuries sustained during the assault. He passed away at Westchester Medical Center. Detectives began investigating the incident as a murder.

Throughout the next few days, police conducted several interviews, evaluated physical evidence, and gathered numerous leads. Detectives charged four local individuals in connection with the murder.

David C. Quaglietta, age 27 of Plattekill; Samantha A. Mitzner, age 36 from Plattekill; Danaya M. Matychak, age 23 from Newburgh; and Marcia L. Strang, age 41 from Newburgh, were each charged with Manslaughter in the 1st degree.

The investigation is ongoing. The New York State Police, the Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force FBI, the City of Newburgh Police Drone Unit, the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office are all assisting in the investigation.
