Police: Drunken Mother with Kids in Car Crashed on Thruway

A family nurse practitioner from the Glens Falls area crashed on the Thruway in the Town of Newburgh while driving drunk with her children in the car, according to police reports.

At approximately 9:15pm on Sunday, the New York State Police responded to a report of a one-car accident in the northbound lane of the Thruway in the Town of Newburgh.

Troopers reported that the driver of the vehicle, Maria C. Gebremichael, age 37 of Gansevoort, NY, was found to be intoxicated. Her 6 year-old and 8 year-old children were reportedly in the vehicle when she crashed.

Gebremichael was taken into police custody and processed at the State Police barracks in Newburgh. Her children were turned over to a sober relative. No injuries were reported.

According to police, Gebremichael’s blood alcohol content was determined to be 0.10%. The legal limit in New York is 0.08%. She was charged with two counts of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child in the Vehicle, Class E felonies. This is commonly known as Leandra’s Law. She was turned over to a sober third party and issued an appearance ticket. She is scheduled for court on August 25, 2022.
