City of Newburgh to Provide Relief from Heat Wave

The City of Newburgh Water Department will be providing much needed relief to its residents during the heat wave that is beginning today. Certain fire hydrants will be open with sprinkler caps, drinking water will be provided across the City, and water park style activities with free breakfast and lunch are ongoing.

The Water Department’s new water trailer will be out and about making rounds across the City throughout the heat wave. Residents can stop by to fill up their reusable water bottles.

In addition, the Water Department will be opening up certain fire hydrants with sprinkler caps attached at designated times.

Today (Tuesday, 7/19/2022), the sprinklers will be running at the intersection of Chamber Street and Farrington Street from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

On Wednesday, the sprinkler caps will be open behind the Mullins Apartments on Walsh Road, as well as at the intersection of Overlook Place and South William Street. Both locations will be operating from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

On Thursday, the sprinklers will be operated at Bush Avenue and Third Street from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

For residents wishing to enjoy a little more water fun, the Recreation Department’s “Summer Family Fun Days” is ongoing. This is open to youth of all ages, but children must be accompanied by their parents or guardians.

The program features a water slide at various City parks with free breakfast and lunch during designated times. Recreational activities will include water games and bouncy houses.

In addition, participants will be provided with recreational equipment to engage in non-organized sports activities such as soccer, kickball, and football. City staff will provide craft material for art projects that will connect participants with their artistic abilities and help them explore socially distant forms of self-expression and much more.

The Summer Family Fun Days are being held at the Delano Hitch Park every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00am to 1:00pm; at the Tyrone Crabb Memorial Park every Tuesday from 12:00pm to 3:00pm; and at Delano Hitch Park every Thursday from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.

The City’s public pool at Delano Hitch Park remains closed this summer due to maintenance problems, but the water activities listed above remain ongoing at Delano Hitch and other parks.
