The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Oklahoma has placed Orange County and the surrounding areas under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch effective until 10:00pm.
A previous watch had been issued for Sullivan County. At 5:00pm, the SPC expanded the watch area to include Orange County and surrounding areas.
Severe thunderstorms have already been firing up in northern Ulster and Dutchess Counties. Additional storms are now developing over the Scranton and Binghamton areas, and are moving east toward the Hudson Valley.
According to experts from the SPC, scattered damaging wind gusts up of 60 to 70 mph are possible. Isolated large hail events up to 1″ in diameter are also possible. The wind and hail events will be most likely if a persistent supercell develops. Storms are expected to increase within the next few hours.
