The New Windsor Fire Department is currently operating a fire at the Squire Village Apartments on Cedar Lane. The dense housing complex is located off Route 94 behind the old Destinta Theater.
Upon arrival, the fire department’s incident commander reported fire in the walls and smoke coming from the front of the building.
The Vail’s Gate Fire Department was called to the scene with a ladder truck and a pumper. The Washingtonville Fire Department was called to respond with a FAST Team, which is responsible for rescuing any firefighters who are trapped or injured inside of the fire building. They were cancelled en route as New Windsor and Vail’s Gate firefighters quickly got the fire under control.
Multiple ambulances from the New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Corp are on the scene. They are providing rehabilitation, drinking water, and misting fans for firefighters. The New Windsor Police Department is assisting with traffic and crowd control.
The Good-Will Fire Department from the Town of Newburgh is covering any additional calls in New Windsor.
At approximately 1:10pm, an Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator reported that the fire is under control. Firefighters are overhauling the building. A fire investigator is also on the scene.
This is the third building fire the New Windsor Fire Department has battled in just over two weeks. On June 24, they fought a 2-alarm fire at a house on John Street. On July 1, they saved a house that was on fire on Lawrence Avenue.
