New York State Governor Kathy Hochul will recall state legislators to pass a new gun safety legislation in response to last week’s decision by the United States Supreme Court that New York’s gun laws violate the Second Amendment of the Constitution. The State Assembly and State Senate recently broke for summer recess.
The legislators will convene in an extraordinary session on June 30, 2022.
“The Supreme Court’s reckless and reprehensible decision to strike down New York’s century-old concealed carry law puts lives at risk here in New York,” Hochul stated. “Since the decision was released, I have been working around the clock with our partners in the legislature to craft gun safety legislation in response to this ruling that will protect New Yorkers. My number one priority as Governor will always be to keep New Yorkers safe.”
New York gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino fired back, “Law-abiding New Yorkers being allowed to protect themselves with a firearm is ‘reprehensible’ according to our unelected governor. She has never been this angry and upset over the skyrocketing crime she’s enabled with her pro-criminal policies like ‘no cash bail,’ ‘less is more’ and the ‘Halt Act.'”
