Newburgh Man Accused of Hate Crime, Road Rage

A Town of Newburgh man was charged with pulling a knife on another driver during an alleged road rage incident in the City of Newburgh. The incident was reported on June 11, 2022 and the driver was arrested yesterday.

William J. Ryan, age 60, is accused of being involved in a road rage incident on Broadway. He allegedly threatened the victim, an African-American City of Newburgh resident, with a knife while calling him a derogatory ethnic slur.

Ryan was charged with Menacing as a Hate Crime in the 2nd degree, a Class E felony. He was held in police custody pending arraignment.

“There is no place for hate in our community,” City of Newburgh Police Chief Anthony Geraci stated. “His racist threats were not only harmful to the victim in this case, but echoes deep within our City.” The chief vowed to hold Ryan accountable for his actions.
