Balmville Fifth Graders Present Poems at Vassar College

Fifth grade students from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District presented “I Am From” poems at a youth conference at Vassar College on Wednesday.

The students, who are from Ms. D’Amico and Mrs. Crozzoli’s class, wrote “I Am From” poems as part of their third social justice unit focused on identity and LGBTQ rights and history. The students were charged with exploring their own identities and the importance of self awareness.

Through their work, the students acknowledged how their treatment of others shapes their core identity.  The students read numerous pieces of literature and then worked through the writing process of editing and revision to finalize their poems.

Once completed, the scholars presented their work at the Transformative Classroom Learning Youth Conference held at Vassar College. The young students were greeted and praised by other students and teachers for their presentation.
