Students and staff at the Gardnertown Elementary School in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District waited patiently for three weeks as they rolled eggs in incubators throughout the school.
The students monitored the development of the chicks on a daily basis. On hatching day, students and staff welcomed the new chicks into the building with smiles and excitement. Many students saw the chicks working their way out of the shells. Wet and tired chicks were the end result.
A total of 87 mixed breed chicks have been peeping throughout the school building and inside classrooms where students enjoy caring for them and watching them grow.
Science teacher Mr. Portzline, along with other teachers, took care of the chicks through their life stages, including weekends.
